Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (Drvl) is a metabolic disease due to absolute/relative lack of insulin with the primary disorder in carbohydrate metabolism and secondary disorder in lipid and protein metabolism. In controlling glucose level, not infrequently, many patients are found to be incompliant. This may result from numerous factors, such as the lack of knowledge on OM treatment, and having less acceptance to the condition. Adequate knowledge and acceptable attitude may help the effort to control glucose level. This was a descriptive study using cross-sectional design and carried out in lntemal Wards, Dr Soetomo Hospital. Samples were 32 OM patients. Samples were detennined using non-probability consecutive sampling. The independent variables were patients' knowledge and attitude, while the dependent variable was glucose level controlling. Data were taken using questionnaire and observation, and analyzed by means of Spearman's rho correlation test c:Og SPSS 12.00 with significance level of0.005. The result showed that OM patients' knowledge on OM treatment was low (56.3%), moderate (21.9%) and high (21.9%). Patients' attitude on OM treatment was negative (78. I%) and positive (21.9%). The effort to control glucose levei by OM patients was less adequate (65.6%), moderate (34.4%), ar.: l!dequate (0%). Statistical test showed correlation between knowledge and glucose controlling (r =0.505, p = 0.003), and between attitude and glucose controlling (r = 0.522 and p = 0.002) with significance level of0.05. It is important to intensively involve the fiunily in learning OM treatment, so that they can involve in helping the patient to increase his/her motivation in controlling glucose level.
