Abstract

Icterus is a yellow color that can be seen in the sclera, mucous membranes, skin, or other organs due to accumulation of bilirubin. Physiological icterus is icterus that occurs due to abnormal metabolism of bilirubin in the newborn's first weeks of age. Kramer is a way of checking the icterus index clinically, simply and easily in the newborns. Early feeding may reduce the occurrence of physiologic icterus in neonates. Early feeding is an act of giving drinks milk and/or formula milk as soon as possible after the baby is born. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of early feeding to decrease icterus index in preterm infants with physiological icterus in Neonates Intensive Care Unit, Sukoharjo General Hospital. Design used in this study was pre-experimental design. The population was preterm infants with physiological icterus. Total sample was 11 respondents, taken according to inclusion criteria. The independent variable was the early feeding. The dependent variable was icterus index. Data were collected using respondents observation. Data were then analyzed using paired T-test with level of significance of < 0.05. Result showed that there was decreasing in the level of a significant icterus index on the first and second day after being given early feeding (p = 0.000), on the second and third day there was decreasing in the level of a significant icterus index (0.000), and for the first and third day there was also decreasing in the level of a significant icterus index after being given early feeding (p = 0.000). It can be concluded that early feeding can influence the decreasing of icterus index in preterm infants with physiological icterus. Further studies should involve larger respondents and better measurement tools to obtain more accurate results.
