Abstract

Disturbed fulfillment of sleep need, either qualitatively or quantitatively, has effect on personality and behavior changes. The objective of this study was to elaborate the effectiveness of modified relaxation technique and the provision of warm milk before sleep in the fulfillment of sleep need among elderly. This was a quasi-experimental study involving two treatment groups and one control group. Samples comprised 21 elderly. Data were collected using observation sheet and analyzed by means Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann Whitney U Test with significance level p.: 0.005. The results using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed an increase before and after modified relaxation technique in sleep need fulfillment qualitatively with p = 0.014 and quantitatively with p = 0.025, in warm milk provision in sleep need fulfillment qualitatively with p = 0.046 and quantitatively with p = 0.038. The results of Mann Whitney U Test showed p = 0.872, indicating no difference in the effectiveness of both interventions, so that they can be used to fulfill the need of sleep in elderly, either qualitatively or quantitatively. In conclusion, although there is no difference in the effectiveness of both interventions, those interventions can be used to meet the need of sleep in elderly, either qualitatively or quantitatively. Further studies should combine both techniques for the fulfillment of sleep among elderly by also taking into account the EEG and measurement of melatonin hormone level.
