Abstract

Linear Gingival Erythema (LGE) is a periodontal disorder and occurs as a red band, 2 3mm in width, at the gingival margin. It is often seen in immunosuppressed patients and has been rarely reported in immunocompetent patients. The prevalence of LGE varies from 5.5% in HIV positive to 16.6 29.5% among seropositive adults and is noted to be higher in severely immunosuppressed patients with low CD4þ T cell counts. 1 Linear Gingival Erythema (LGE) is a progressive disease described in HIV positive patients and is considered to be an early stage of necrotizing periodontitis. 2 Sometimes patients with chronic gingivitis have a clinical picture similar to LGE. The main management in such cases is to carry out periodontal basic treatment, SRP, and other supportive treatments such as photodynamic therapy Objective of this case report is to help clinicians to recognize and distinguish LGE and give a proper treatment for the oral lesions. We reported a case on a 19 year old male, found with red band, 2 3mm in width, at the gingival margin with the diagnosis of chronic gingivitis and differential diagnosis of LGE. On first visit, be treated SRP. Then control a week later, redness at gingiva margin slightly reduced. Patients are educated to better maintain oral hygiene. Photodynamic therapy starts at the next control, and significant results, ie redness is significantly reduced. Complete blood tests are also carried out to support the results of the examination. The results of therapy that showed improvement, gave a diagnosis to the patient, chronic gingivitis with a different diagnosis of LGE.
