Abstract

Beautiful Boxer is a Thailand film which based on the true story of Nong Toom, a transgender muay thai boxer. He decided to do coming-out when he is on his successful boxing career. This study aims to examine how is gender performativity represented and what ideology lies on the film. The framework of the study is gender performativity by Judith Butler. This is a qualitative research and this study is done by analysing selected scenes which focus on Nong Toom's gender performance. In this film. Toom performed two genders; when he was on the ring he performed as man, when he was off the ring he performed as woman. The analysis not only concerns about narrative aspect but also non-narrative aspects such as costume. make-up and perfonnance. This study has resulted two findings. First, the gender performance which was done by Toom proves that gender is very fluid.. Second. although this is a queer film. the ending of the film emphasizes heterononnativity.
