Abstract

In this thesis, the writer is trying to find out types of multiword lexical units found in the national scope articles of Indonesian Daily News, an English newspaper based in Surabaya. Furthermore, the writer is interested to find out what types of multiword lexical units mostly occur in the articles and the reasons behind the use of these multiword lexical units. Anthony Cowie, a lexicographer, argues that due to timeconstraints, news reporten and journalists tend to use multiword lexical units that are already established and well-known. There is also a recurrent use of particular multiword lexical units among these journalists. By using Rosamund Moon's textual functions of multiword lexical units added with theories from other lexicograpben, the writer can classify and analyze the multiword lexical units based on the contributions of these units in the structures of the sentences in the newspaper articles.
