Abstract
Babbitt is one of Sinclair Lewis' best works. As his previous novel, he uses satire in composing the story. He reveals the life of mAmerican middle class in 1920's. He depicts the situation as close as to the fact, so that the critics say that this story is a documentary novel. The title Babbit is taken from its main character name's George F. Babbitt. It is actually the story of George F. Babbitt' life, as representative of American middle class. Though Babbitt's life, Sinclair Lewis shows to the reader that material success is not guarantee for the happiness of life. He also shows the crude of bussines enterprises, which people see it as a promising profession. Sinclair Lewis writes the opposition as his style in satirizing the situation. He depicts the different condition to bring people to the reality. From this novel, the reader might have a description about the American middle class especially in Twenties.
