Abstract

Living with enthusiasm is an important aspect for those who want to achieve their dream. It is also an issue that carried out in The Barn by Avi. This study intends to find how Benjamin's characterization is portrayed and how Benjamin tries to accomplish his father's dream to build the ham. The theory that will be used in this study is New Criticism. This study finds that Benjamin's characterizations which are smart, enthusiastic, persuasive, and caring will be his basic effort to solve the obstacles that are his sister's plan to leave her family, the way to communicate with his father, the objection from his siblings to build the barn together, and the lack of tool and time in accomplishing his father's dream to build the ham.
