Abstract

This paper attempts to criticize animated film How to Train Your Dragon as hidden colonial discourses. This film is based on a collection of books written by Cressida Cowell. How to Train Your Dragon is a 2010 fiction film adaptation directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois under Dream Works production. The point of view of colonial discourses illustrates through the relationship between white human character namely Hiccup and black non-human character namely Toothless. The theory of colonial discourses through Said's definition of Orientalism was used. This study used qualitative method and it was followed by observing preferred scenes showing the issue of colonial discourses. In addition, narrative aspects and non-narrative aspects are used to produce a comprehensiv analysis. Three hidden colonial discourses were identified through the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless, Hiccup mastering Toothless, and pet-owner friendship. Furthermore, the results of this reseah find that How to Train Your Dragon presents white human superiority by owning and controlling dragon similar to human slave.
