Abstract

This study is about the language choice of Islamic preachers in Boyolangu Banyuwangi. It explains about the variety of languages that the Islamic preachers choose when they interact with other people and when they deliver the sermons. It also explains the factors influencing the language choice. In this study, the researcher conducted a qualitative descriptive approach. The data were analyzed by using Fishman theory of language choice. As the participants, five Islamic preachers were asked to answer questions during the interview. The findings showed that in the context of interaction with other people, the Islamic preachers chose the Indonesian, Javanese or Osing language. Meanwhile, in context of preaching or delivering the sermons, the Islamic preachers chose the Indonesian, Javanese, Arabic, and Osing language. Besides, there were some factors that influenced the Islamic preachers' language of choice. The factors were stability of bilingualism in the community (language shift situation); participants of the interaction: language proficiency, language preference, age, sex, socioeconomic status (SES), occupation, language attitudes, intimacy; content of interactions (topics, lack of specialized terms). From those factors, the dominant factor of language choice of Islamic preachers in Boyolangu Banyuwangi was the participants of the interaction which consist of language proficiency, language preference, age, sex, socioeconomic status (SES), occupation, language attitudes, and also intimacy.
