Abstract

Children speak using their own word in simplifying adult language words to match with their developing phonology. The present paper is intended to find out the phonological alternation and process that occur in the speech of a twenty one month old Javanese child. The writer took the data from a normal child aged twenty one month old, named Lyla. In this study, the writer used Davenport and Hannahs's phonological alternations theory and Ingram's phonological processes theory. The type of phonological alternations are phonetically conditioned alternation, phonetically and morphologically conditioned alternations, and phonetically, morphologically and lexically conditioned alternations, while the type of phonological processes are substitution process, assimilatory process, and syllable structure process in which each of those three processes is still devided into several sub processes. This study is a case study because it focuses on one participant. The techniques of data collection is done by recording and taking a note, when the word that is produced by the child in natural conversation. Next, the data transcribed into phonetically. Then, classified and analysed the data in terms of the phonological alternations and processes. There are only one out of four types of the alternation and eight out of fourteen types of the sub processes occurred. In addition, the writer also found another processes that are not included either in Ingram.
