Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe kinds of English sounds which are mispronounced by Citilink Flight Attendants. In addition, this study also describes how the English sounds are mispronounced. The data of the study are recorded utterances of five flight attendants when they read the safety announcement to the passengers in the flight which are transcribed orthographically. The data were analyzed by using the theory of phonetic proposed by Davenport & Hannahs (1998). The result shows that there are some mispronunciations in consonant and vowel pronunciation. Concerning the English consonant sounds, the participants largely mispronounced voiced [z] with voiceless [s], dental [8] with alveolar [t], and fricative [8] with stop [t]. Concerning to the English vowel sounds, the participants mostly mispronounced diphthong into monopthong such as [ei] into [a] and mostly mispronounced [a) with [u] sound. In addition, there are several sounds which do not exist in flight attendant's utterances such as (9] sound. In brief, it is assumed that the absence of that sound is caused by the fact that it does not exist in the Indonesian language
