Abstract

Faded Portraits is a novel written by E. Breton De Nijs in 1900s during the period of coloniution of the Dutch in Indonesia. The setting is located in West Java This novel is known as one of Asian literature, which enriches the world of literature. The novel deals with Aunt Sophie, the woman whose Dutch father had extra marital relationship with Indies woman. During her life Aunt Sophie used to claims herself as a pure Dutch woman. In reality, she often does Javanese tradition and habits secretly. Although, she always claims herself as a European and shows her disgust expression whenever and wherever she find anything or people that was very native, Sophie cannot leave her native habits. In analyzing the main character, the writer uses Homi K. Bhaba's concept of Mimicry as a part of Post-Colonial Criticism. The writer considers that this concept will be very useful to support her analysis toward Sophie's ambiguous character. As a colonized, native and Indies-Dutch people like to imitate colonizer lifestyle and upbringing because they consider that colonizer's upbringing is better and more honoured than their own style. Sophie, who is not pure Dutch, because of her mother was Indies, tries to have an upbringing as well as Dutch or Europe woman, but she still does native habits.
