Abstract

This thesis is a literary study about the colonial practices in Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. Since this study examines the colonial practices, it is presented by analyzing some steps or strategies of colonization which was started from the early arrival of the white men until the white men were able to gain power toward Ibo people. It particularly highlights the events which happened including some characters in this novel, also drawing attention to evecything that contributes significant meaning toward the colonial practices. Ashcroft's and Bhabha's theories of colonial discourse and postcolonial theory are considered as the most suitable theories related to the topic. On one hand, the colonial discourse is used to observe the colonial practices. On the other hand, the post-colonial theory in a sense of mimicry is used to see the reaction of colonized people toward colonization. As the result, this study reveals a clear definition and explanation about the colonial discourse in colonial practices toward Ibo people. Moreover, it finds the mimicry and ambivalence of the Ibo people which is employed the attempt to decolonize.
