Abstract
This study aims to find out how the semantic changes of Japanese loanword (gairaigo) occur in Nipponia magazine and what the dominant semantic change of Japanese loanword found in Nipponia magazine. To achieve the goal, the writer observes 20 articles which have been taken from Nipponia magazine. In discussion, the writer found 3 3 Japanese loanwords which are formed through semantic change Processes. The data is analyzed through a theory of semantjc change processes by Crystal ( 1 998). In his theory, Crystal divides the semantic change processes into six processes: semantic narrowing, semantic broadening, semantic amelioration, semantic pejoration, semantic weakening, and semantic shift. Crystal's theory is chosen because it is clear and understandable in describing semantic change processess in Japanese loanwords. The findings show that the most dominant process is semantic narrowing (60.60%), and then semantic broadening (30.30%), semantic pejoration (3.04%), and the last is semantic shift (6.06%). From the findings above, the writer concludes that many of Japanese loanwords which have been taken from Nipponia magazine formed through semantic change processes in lexical meaning compared with the English meanings. It happens because when the one of English word is used in Japan, many Japanese people know a few thing in meaning about the new word. With that ignorantly, the semantic narrowing process is formed in Japanese loanwords.
