Abstract

This study describes about the relation between human and nature in the film Beasts of the Southern Wild. This film is directed by Benh Zeitlin in 2012. This film describes the efforts of a certain community in Louisiana to survive from hurricanes and aurochs which threat them. This study aims to get deeper understanding about the cause and effect of the environmental problem which happen in this film. This study uses Ecocriticism approach by Cheryll 8. Glottfelty to analyze the relationship between human and nature. The method which is used in this study is qualitative method to get the detailed explanation about the issue of this film based on Ecocriticism approach. The issue of relationship between human and nature is analyzed by narrative aspects from the storyline, character and setting, while the non-narrative aspects such as the camera angles, camera shots, and costumes are used to complete the analysis. After analyzing this film, this study finds water as life's source also becomes the life's threat for living-things. The natural disaster which happens is caused by human activity. It finds that the ideology constructed is anti-pastoral. The finding shows that the contrast actually leads to a deeper understanding that the existence of human is insignificant to return the balance of nature and nature fail to return its balance because the existence of human's technology.
