Abstract

Life is tough. Therefore, it is interesting to find out how someone can overcome all his problems in this tough-life. Since everyone must struggle in order to keep alive, no matter where he is, he is expected to have a strong spirit. The spirit is important for a reason that it is a vital mean to endure, survive, and continue living. The struggle itself is difficult if it happened in a desert place. With a never-ending spirit, the struggle for living in such condition can be successful. Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe is a story about a man's struggle against the power of nature. The major character, Robinson Crusoe, is cast away on a desert island, which is uninhabited, remote, and isolated from other islands. He is far away from civilization. He is horribly alone. To find out how he keeps alive and able to overcome his loneliness, the setting and the character are significant to be analyzed. Therefore, the Objective Theory, the Intrinsic Approach which is focused on setting and character> and the Psychological Background are applied in this thesis.
