Abstract

Maggie: A Girl of the Street is a successful picture of slum social life in general. This thesis tries to present about social life that social life brings destruction to the main character, Maggie. This thesis wants to show destructiveness of slum social environment and the inability of man in avoiding that forces. The people in Rum Alley are forced to adopt the moral values stated in their society. They believe that the moral codes of their society are correct. They easily follow the moral codes in order to be accepted in the society. Those forces cause the people in Rum Alley to live in pressure. To carry out the moral values, the society has to ignore the value of human worth itself. The society will punish those who deviate from the moral codes stated. This is clearly shown through the chaos Maggie. When her desire is stronger than her obedience to the norms of her society, she starts to follow her will. Unfortunately, her society does not agree with her behaviors. They consider her to disgrace the environment that she has to be exiled.
