Abstract

The study examines the main character in Richard Yates's Revolutionary Road named April Wheeler. This study discusses her characteristic towards her decision due to her motivation. Two basic problems are, first how motivation portrayed in April Wheeler's character in pursuing her dream in the novel Richard Yates's Revolutionary Road and second, how April Wheeler's motivation influence her life. Psychological approach concentrates on the theory of human motivation by Abraham Maslow will be used as the theory, especially discussion about the stage of the hierarchy of needs suggested by Maslow which is unfulfilled by April Wheeler. Description about April Wheeler's fulfillment in hierarchy needs will be the basic motivation issue since there are a lot of development which lead into motivational disposition, motivational conflict, motivation failure and level of personality function based on Maslow theory.
