Abstract

The dignity of man lies in his freedom. Human beings are capable of free choice and that it is in their activity as thinking beings that this freedom can be identified most fundamentally. Thus, man is morally free to determine the purposes in his life through choosing actions which he reasons to be the best way to realize it. The significance of this finding way to freedom is greatly reflected in the novel Papillon. To understand Papillon's desire to be free, the writer must not ignore the most important aspect in life that is existence. The novel itself by Henri Charriere is basically telling a simple thing: a convict wants to be free by escaping from prison. But actually, that is not the essence of the analysis in this thesis. Through her analysis, the writer will describe some phenomena in Papillon's life-during his punishment periods and escaping efforts-which give him the real truth of human existence. Man's consciousness plays an important role in finding the human existence. That is why the writer relates Papillons struggle to the humanistic perspective where humanism praises man not from vanity but from esteem for that characteristic capacity of enlightened choice which focuses attention on freedom.
