Abstract
Communication is one of the most important aspects in people's life. People communicate one each other to express their intention or to get information from others. An example of communication is speech, which is usually delivered in a certain event by a certain person. There are many famous speeches in the world. Those speeches are famous because the speakers know exactly what and how to say through their speech to their hearer or audience. One of the most famous speeches in the world is I Have a Dream delivered by Martin Luther King, Jr, one of the greatest orators in the world. In I Have a Dream, King used metaphors widely. In linguistics, metaphor is considered as part of pragmatics. The problem of this study is the intended meaning behind the metaphors in I Have a Dream speech. And the theory of pragmatics and metaphor, particularly Searle's Principles are used to analyze those metaphors. From twenty paragraphs of the speech text, there are only sixteen paragraphs, which have metaphorical utterances. The discussion is done by analyzing the metaphors found in each paragraph one by one. Based on the discussion, there are one dead metaphor and three principles in where those metaphors belong to, they are principle number five, principle number seven, and principle number eight. Moreover, most of the metaphors of the speech belong to principle number seven.
