Abstract

This paper is about the use of code mixing in Muslim clergies' sennons in Ponpes Al Jihad Surabaya This study had two objectives: (a} to find out the types of code switching and code mixing in Muslim clergies' sennons, and (b} to find out the reasons of Muslim clergies use of code switching and code mixing in their sermons. In conducting this study, the writer uses descriptive qualitative method. The data was taken from audio records and interviews. The writer used Hoffinan and Saville-Troike theory to analyze the data. The data show that there are three types of code switching (Indonesian and Javanese} based on the grammatical classification: intra-sentential code switching, inter-sentential code switching and emblematic switching. The data also show three types of code mixing (Indonesian and Javanese} based on the grammatical classification: intra-sentential code mixing, inter-lexical code mixing and involving a change of pronunciation. Beside that, there are six reasons for code switching and code mixing used by the Muslim clergies but the most dominant reason is the real lexical need. The writer eventually concludes from the interview data that the use of code mixing and code mixing was to make the sermons more alive, fun, and to express group identity as a Javanese.
