Abstract

This study was undertaken at Ophthalmologic Surgical Inpatients Wards, Dr Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya. The main problem observed in this study was that postoperative patients often experience the complication of increasing intraoculer pressure. This condition is suspected to be affected by the behavier of the patients themselves who have insufficient information on the prevention of post- operative increase of intraoculer pressure. Health education is therefore important to change post- operative behavier. The objective of this study was to analyze thi effect of health education by the nurses on the patients' behavioral change in preventing intraocular pressure post- cataract surgery. This study used pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design with samples consisted of 24 post-cataract surgery patients, who were emolled using consecutive sampling method. The independent variable was post-cataract surgery behavier. Data were collected using questionnaire and observation before and observation before and after health education. Analysis was undertaken using Mann Withney Test with significance level of a ~ 0.05. Result showed that before and after health education, there were changes in knowledge from 1.17 to 2.92 with significance of(p = 0.001); attitude, from 1. 17 to 2.00 (p = 0.014) and behavier, to 2.92 (p = 0.001). The intraoculer pressure itself, as expected, showed no change (p = 0.002). these results demonstrated the effect of health education on the patiens behavioral change in preventing the increase of intraoculer pressure post-senile cataract surgery. The results of this study have revealed that health education has effect on behavioral change of post-cataract surgery patients, as proved by the absence of intraocular pressure in treatment group. It can be recommended that health education should be systematically provided as early as possible after admittance at the hospital. The use of media in this effort will be valuable since the patients may keep the information better. Information on health education should also be promoted for the nurses.
