Abstract
Chemotherapy is one choice of cervical carcinoma solutions. This therapy often causes stress to patients. The optimum result of this therapy depends on the patient's knowledge about chemotherapy and adaptive coping mechanism. This research was done to identify cervical carcinoma patient's knowledge about chemotherapy, coping mechanism and correlation between knowledge about chemotherapy and coping mechanism. Design used in this research was Cross Sectional that was conducted on cervical carcinoma patients at Obstetry and Gynecology Wards Dr Soetomo HospitaJ Surabaya between June 6-23 2005. The popu]ation was utero cervical carcinoma patients who received chemotherapy. Sample taking method was purposive sampling. Total sample was 24 respondents, taken according to inclusion criterias. The independent variab]e was knowledge about chemotherapy. Dependent variable was coping mechanism at cervical carcinoma patients who received chemotherapy. Data were coJlected using structured questionnaire. Data were then analyzed using Spearman Rho with level of significance of 0,05. The results showed that patient knowledge was in good category and coping mechanism was also in good category. Relationship analysis showed a significant relation between knowledge about chemotherapy and coping mechanism with p : 0.000. It can be concluded that the knowledge about chemotherapy has correlation with coping mechanism at cervical carcinoma patients receiving chemotherapy. From this result, it is suggested to keep improving patient's knowledge by giving information that can be understood by the society and provide support for the patients to continue their therapy.
