Abstract

Human resource development in nursing with a starting point from the improvement of nursing education qualifications is a strategic step that should be taken. However, in fact, up to the year 2003 nursing care providers with the qualification of S I/graduate-degree in government-owned provincial hospital (Ulin Hospital, Banjarmasin) consists only 2 individuals. The limited number of . graduate-level professional nursing care providers is likely related to motivation. The aim of this study was to identifY factors correlating to the motivation of diploma-degree nurses to continue their education to graduate-degree in nursmg. This study used cross-sectional design. Samples were taken from diplomadegree nurses working at the Inpatient Wards, Ulin Hospital, Banjarmasin, with the sample size of 58 respondents. Samples were selected using purposive sampling type of probability sampling method. Data were collected by means of questionnaire, and analyzed with Linear Regression test with significance level of ~0.05 . Results of analysis showed that most of the respondents had higher motivation (67%), moderate motivation (14%), and lower motivation (19%). Respondents of 20 - 30 years old were 45%, 21 - 40 years 4 I %. and 41 - 50 years 14%. Results of linear regression test on motivation revealed p = 0.000. From all respondents, 47% were male, and 53% female, and results of linear regression test on motivation revealed p = 0.021. Married respondents were 79%. and those who were unmarried were 20.7%. and results of linear regression test on motivation demonstrated p = 0.011. Regarding with support from superiors, most of the respondents (70%) felt that their superiors gave less support. 9% no support, while only 2% felt of having much support from their superiors. Results of linear regression test on motivation revealed p = 0.372. Above analysis showed significant correlation between age, sex, and marriage status and nurse's motivation in human resource development by taking SlIgraduate-degree program in nursing, with significance level of < 0.05. However, support from superior had no correlation with motivation, as indicated by significance level of p > 0.05.
