Abstract

The main problem for the children with autism is the lackness in communication because of the early development brain's damage and several functions of the brain so it can effect for their communication ability. The audio visual method is a method that use the aspect of audio and visual. The children with autism have a high sensibility with audio and visual. This study used quasy experiment design. The population was the kindergarten authistic children in Bangun Bangsa School of Children with Special needs Surabaya. Total sample was 12 respondents taken according to purposive sampling and inclusion criteria. They are divided into treatment and control groups, so there are 6 children for each group. The independent variabel was the audio visual method and the dependent variabel was the communication ability of children with autism. Data were collected using observation sheet and analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test (comparison test in two paired samples) and Mann Whitney UTest (comparison test in two independent samples) with level of significance of p:SO.OS. Result of Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test in treatment group showed that audio visual method had significance level on increasing communication ability with p=O.02S, while the result of Mann Whitney U-Test was p=O.OIS. It can be concluded that the audio visual method can increase the communication ability in children with autism because children with autism can be easily learn and remember using their visual. Audio visual method can be recommended for parents, institution and therapist to use this method to increase the communication ability for the children with autim. For further observation study can use more variety video materials and more longer estimated time.
