Abstract

Infants aged 4-6 months have a rapid growth, so that if their body weight does not increase accordingly, there will be risk of growth disorder and the reduction of immunity. Bodyweight is affected by food intake. Therefore, stimulus should be given to enhance their appetite to increase nutritional intake that may result in the increase of body weight. This deserves a particular attention for it is expected that bodyweight of infants aged 4-6 months can increase according to their aged 4-6 months, who lived in Baruhaljo Village, Subdistrict Durenan, Trenggalek, on the increase of their bodyweight. This was a quasi-experimental study involving non-equivalent control group. The population was infants aged 4-6 months lived in Baruhaljo Village, Subdistrict Durenan, Trenggalek, from November to December 2004. samples taken comprised of 10 infants who met the inclusion criteria. These infants were divided into five infants for group receiving massage, and the dependent variable was bodyweight. Data were collected by bodyweight observation using scale. Data were analyzed by means of Independent t Test with significance level ofp~0.05. Result revealed that massage in infant aged 4-6 months had effect on the increase of their bodyweight according to their age. The difference in those receiving massage and those not receiving massage had p = 0.000, indicating that massage was effective in increasing bodyweight. The limitation of this study was that the respondent allocation in~o treatment and control group was not homogeneous, so that the result were less accurate. Result revealed to showed that the effect of massage can the stimulate of nerves vagus that add to this peristaltic so that rapid hungry and the growth to food intake the increase of bodyweight. The reccommendated is to mothers, always to give the massage to her baby, because is more important to the increase of bodyweight according to their age.
