Abstract

"Preventing snoring for the unconscious patient is absolutely defined to carry out by health professionals due to breathing disturbances of the patient which are caused by root of the tongue which obstructs the upper airway partially. 1t is therefore most useful to apply airway adjunct to patient such as oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airway when manual clearance ended in failure. To determine the effectiveness of comparing of using oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airway for preventing snoring, this is the research arranged at Medical Admission Room and Resuscitation Room in Emergency Department of Dr.Soetomo General Hospital. Method of research is Post Test Only Design, held in 2 weeks time duration on September 2005. Population sampling is 14 respondents, 7 respondents were applied with oropharyngeal airway and 7 other respondents with nasopharyngeal airway_ Sampling technique is purposive non random sampling. rndependent variables are oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airway while snoring is as dependent one. Grouping of data is in observing the eftectiveness of comparing between applying oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal ainvay to preventing snoring on first, third, and fifth minute. Data was analyzed on SPSS for Windows Application version 10.0 and tested in Chi Square. Level of significance p~0 . 05 . The results with fisher exact, the probability on first minute was 0.462, third minute was 0.021, and fifth minute was 0.029. The conclusion is that applying nasopharyngeal airway is not effective in preventing snoring for unconscious patient but oropharyngeal airway is more effective one on the third minute."
