Abstract

Schizophrenia is one of mental disorders which has become a complicated issue at this time and the number is increasing. This mental disorder does not bring someone suffered to the death, however it will cause to the depth of suffering for individuals and a heavy burden for the family, both mental or material. It requires support from various parties, one of them in the form of peer support groups. The purpose of this study was to describe the influence of peer group support to change the level of knowledge, attitudes and actions in caring for families of schizophrenics in the Hospital Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. Soetomo Surabaya. This was a Pre-experiments study using one group pre-posttest design. Target Population consists of 14 respondents, This research using purposive sampling method. The number of samples taken ) 2 of the respondents according to criteria of inclusion. The result showed that peer group support has a significant influences in increasing knowledge level of family (p= 0.002), which means peer group support has influence to the knowledge level of the patient's family, obtained on the value of family attitudes (p= 0.014), which means peer support group has influence to the family's attitude in taking good care of the patients, whereas the value obtained the family action (p=O.002) which means there are significant effect of the peer group support in family's action, those indicate that there an influence of peer support groups on the change of family knowledge, attitude and action in caring client with schizophrenia. It can be concluded that peer group support can improve knowledge, attitudes and actions in caring for families of schizophrenics. Peer group support to help families fmd a way out of his problems so that the mechanism is more adaptive family kllping. This may be a suggestion for the hospitals to conduct peer group support to enhance the knowledge, attitudes and actions in carrying out the task of how to care for family members of schizophrenic families.
