Abstract

Treatment of family members in hospitals who are suffering from stroke will cause anxiety for the whole family since the occurrence of stroke may change the life of the couples, families and other loved ones. Hospitalization is a new situation that is not comfortable for clients and families. Such feeling results from the presence of many new stressors that are faced simultaneously, such a strange environment. The purpose of this study was to explain the effect of room orientation based on to SOP of the admission of new patients on the level of anxiety of husbands/wives of stroke patients fIrStly treated at Medical Ward, Seruni Room, Dr. Soetomo Hospital. This study used pre-experimental design. Population was husbands/wives who waited for stroke patients at Seruni Room, during this study. Total sample was 2 I patients selected with purposive sampling. The independent variable was room orientation of the according to SOP of new patients admission. The dependent variable was the level of anxiety of the spouses of stroke patients. Data were collected with a structured interview with anxiety measuring using HARS, and analyzed with Wilcoxon signed rank test with a < 0,05. The result of statistical Wilcoxon signed rank test showed significant value p = 0,00. This means the probability had a < 0,05 indicating the effect of room orientation according to SOP of new patients admission on the level of anxiety of spouses of stroke patients who for the first time treated at Medical Ward, Seruni Room, Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya. It can be concluded that the decrease in the level of anxiety of the spouses of stroke patients admitted for the first time is due to the independent action of the nurse at the time when the patients is admitted by giving room orientation according to the SOP of new patient admission to the family (husbands/wives) of patients in appropriate ways.
