Abstract

Intraocular pressure examination is intended to find the pressure of human eyeball. The measurement is simple, although it requires the examiners' expertise and patience. The repetition of intraocular pressure examination is due to anxiety, which results in uncooperativeness of the patients, such as blinking or closing the eyes. In Christian Hospital, Mojowarno, from 120 measured patients, 40 patiens were measured imperfectly. Progressive relaxation is a inner muscular relaxation technique that needs no imagination, diligence, and suggestion. Human body responds to anxiety that stimulates mind and events by muscular strain to reduce the anxiety. This study used quasi-experimental design with purposive sampling method. Samples who met the inclusion criteria comprised 20 persons, divided into treatment and control groups, comprising 10 patients in each. Results of chi-square test showed that the accuracy of intraocular pressure measurement had p = 0.01. It was apparent that progressive relaxation technique could provide a significant effect on the accuracy of intraocular pressure measurement. Anxiety reduction could prevent repeated measurement. The results of this study can be used as an input for establishing standard procedure of intraocular pressure measurement in Christian Hospital, Mojowarno. Before carrying out the measurement, an eye caregiver should understand and have capability in progressive relaxation technique.
