Abstract

The effort to prevent complications in hypertensive clients remains unsatisfactory. It may affected by several factors, such as knowledge and motivation. Lack of knowledge and motivation may be caused from lack of information of hypertension and resulting complications and on the efforts to prevent these unexpected effects. The objective of this study was to reveal correlation between level of knowledge and motivation with the effort to prevent compilations in hypertensive clients at Cardiology Outpatient Clinic, Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya. This study used cross-sectional design. Population was all clients admitted with primary (essential) hypertention at Cardiology Outpatient Clinic, Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya. Samples consisted of 32 individuals, enrolled based of inclusive criteria. The independent variables were knowledge and motivation. The dependent variable was the effort to prevent complications. Data were collected using questionnaire and observation. Data were analyzed by mean of Spearman's Rank Test with significance level of 0.05. Results showed correlations between level of knowledge and the effort to prevent complications (p = 0.036). A strong correlation was also found between motivation and the effort to prevent complications (p = 0.000). In conclusion, high level of knowledge, as well as strong motivation, has correlation to high effort in preventing compilations. Further studies should observe the effect to attitude and motivation with diet compliance for the prevention of complications in hypertensive clients.
