Abstract

Efforts to prevent complications of hypertension are the clients' activities intended to prevent the occurrence of complications that may result in the severity of hypertension. One factor affecting these efforts is the client's knowledge on hypertension. The aim of this study was to disclose relations between the variable of client's knowledge of hypertension as independent variable and efforts to prevent complications as dependent variable. Design used in this study was cross-sectionai. Popul.ation was hypertensive clients admitted to Baruharjo Community Health Center, Trenggalek. Samples were taken using purposive sampling, by which this study enrolled 30 hypertensive patients who met the inclusion criteria and admitted to Baruharjo Community Health Center, Trenggalek, from 1 to 30 November 2002. Relations between both variables were examined by means of Spearrnan correlations analysis. Data processing and analysis showed that client's knowledge on hypertension in Baruharjo Community Health Center, Trenggalek, in 2002 was reliable, and the efforts to prevent complications of hypertension was also found to be remarkable. A slight positive relation was found between client's knowledge on hypertension and the efforts to prevent complications (rho = 0.405). In this setting, nurse, as a health educator, plays an important role to introduce health behavior by considering other affecting factors, such as occupation and health service. Other researchers who want to investigate similar subject should involve these factors in their studies.
