Abstract

Depression is one mental problem, which is often found in elderly community. Some elderly don't stay with their families, but they live at home of the eldery. This study is designed for learning factors that effect the degree of depression on elderly living in Panti Wreda (home of the elderly) Bhakti Luhur of Surabaya branc:h. Study design uses cross-sectional method. Applied sample dwellers of Panti Wredha Bhakti Luhur Surabay Branch totaling 35 people, under sampling technique of purposive, duration ofliving in Panti, motivation of being at Panti, initiator of the elderly being at Panti and family visit. Whereas dependent variable are degrees of depresion, mild middle and severe. Data collections are taken using quistionnare and measurement of depression degree with "Geriatric Depression Scale 15" Collected data are analyzed under chi-square test (x2 ), degree ofreliability is designed for P ~ 0,05. Study results indicates that factor having no significant effect is past occupation with x2 = 3,313, significance degree is 0,209 (P > 0,05), frequency of kin's visit's with x2 = 1,425, significance effect are duration of staying in Panti with x2 = 7,954, significance degree of 0,019 (P < 0,05), motivation of being at Panti with x2 = 7,230, significance degree of 0,027 (P < 0,05) and, initiator of being at Panti with x2 = 12,627 with significance degree of0,002 (P < 0,05). It can be concluded that, in this study, initiator factor of being at Panti, duration factor of staying in Panti and, motivation factor of being at Panti influence depression degree. Whereas factor of past occupation and factor of kin's visit frequency have no influence on degree of elderly depression. "' The researcher's suggestion is that attention needs to be paid on the background of elderly befor staying at homes of the elderly for controlling and making efforts to eliminate further increase of depression.
