Abstract
Infants with low birthweight are highly susceptible to infections, as the defense system of their body was less maximally developed. They easily suffer from any infectious disease. A nurse, who is carrying out his/her duty in treatment wards, sh0uld therefore have balanced knowledge, attitude, and action. This study was focused on knowledge and attitude with the nurse's action in preventing infections among infants with low birthweight. This study used crosssectional design, in which the population was all nurses working in Neonatal Wards, Manado Central General Hospital. Samples were collected using purposive sampling. Those who met the inclusion criteria were 20 respondents. The independent variables in this study were knowledge and attitude of the nurses' on preventing infections among infants with low birthweight. The dependent variable was their actions in preventing such infection in low birthweight infants. The instruments used for data collection were questionnaire for knowledge and attitude, and observation for the actions of the nurses in preventing infections among rhose infants. Data were presented using bar, pie, and pyramidal diagrams. To find relationship between knowledge and attitude and nurse's action in preventing infections among the infants, data were analyzed using Spearman rho correlation test by means of SPSS 10.0 software program for Windows. Results revealed that low, moderate, and high level of knowledge were found in respectively 20%, 30%, and 50% of the respondents, while less appropriate, moderate, and appropriate attitude were respectively found in 5%, 55%, and 40% of the respondents. Finally, 35% and 65% of the respondents showed less appropriate and moderate actions, while none of them showed appropriate actions. Using Spearman rho correlation test, the correlation coefficient of relationship between knowledge and nurse's action in preventing infection among infants with low birthweight was 0.812 with significance level of 0.000 (p < 0.05), while the correlation coefficient of relationship between attitude and nurse's action was 0.631 with significance level of 0.003 (p < 0.05). It can be c9ncluded that relationship between knowledge and action is very strong, while relatitmship between attitude and nurse's action is strong.
