Abstract

ICU ward is a stressful place for clients and their families, so that many of the families waiting in the ICU experience psychosocial problems. This study aims to analyze the effect of counseling on clients' family psychosocial needs in ICU ward, Tarakan Hospital. This study used a pre-experimental one group pre- and post-design. Independent variable was the counseling, and the dependent variable was the psychosocial needs of families. The number of samples was 29 individuals who were the client's families waiting at ICU ward, Tarakan Hospital. They were collected by simple random sampling. The research instrument was the questionnaire from CCFNI (Critical Care Family Need Inventor). Data were analyzed with nonparametric test Wilxocon rank test. The results showed the effect of counseling on the psychosocial needs, which included the dimensions of infonnation (p = 0.00), support (p = 0.00), comfort (p = 0.00), closeness (p = 0.00), and assurance services (p = 0.00). Through counseling activities, the family are guided by a counselor to deal with the problem of unfulfilled psychosocial needs as the provision of infonnation about the condition after therapy, a chance for conversation with the officers in each visiting time, notification service to the house if there are sudden changes in conditions, the chance for helping to take care of family members with physical illness, orientation about the best services performed at the ICU. The hospital is recommended to implement these counseling activities sustainably and nurses are expected to master this role well. Researchers in the future are expected to perfonn advanced research on family coping after counseling with larger sample size.
