Abstract

This study is stimulated by tne facts that the efforts to formalize education (schools) as a new innovation for the hinterland society do not always get positive response. Questions still raise why schools are not always rationally adopted for their children's education. To answer the above problems, this study tries to identify and describe the general reasons of adopting schools by the hinterland society. This study also intends to know the typological differences in their rationale to adopt schools as a place for their children's education. In this study, qualitative research approach is utilized. This study also uses social definition paradigms in its procedures. This study was conducted at Batu Nyapau village, one of the hinterland remote and absolute villages in Kapuas Regency, Central Kalimantan, from March 1997 to May 1998. Based on the findings, the adoption of schools by the hinterland society is typologically categorized into two, i.e. ayungku (:raditional locali!y ration3le) and huhah {modem locality rationale). Ayungku is a typical hinterland society belief with their traditional locality rationale, which refuses to adopt schools with the reasons that schools are not funtional for their household socio-economic daily life. Schools are not kind for their Kaharingan belief inherited by their fcrefather. Hubah with its modem locality rationale decides to adopts schools as a part io have a more improved way oflife. They still appreciate traditions as a part of culture, but they are not ideal anymore because they trust schools more to give better education for their children, and in tum, have better way of life. This study suggests that the process of adopting schools as a new innovation is not always in line with positivistic thought as stated by Rogers and others. The study shows that the decision to adopt schools depends on the horizon or structured background of each individuals within the society. The findings of this study support the theory of phenomenology proposed by Berger and others.
