Abstract
This research, entitled "Cultural Change in Tanjung Isuy Tourist Destination, Kabupaten Kutai, East Kalimantan", unveils the cultural elements that have changed in the Dayak society, especially of Tanjung Isuy Village. The process of change could be seen as an impact of foreign cultural elements, or as an impact of the dynamics occuring in that society such as competition and innovation. Tanjung Isuy Village is one of the tourist destinations in East Kalimantan visited by domestic as well as foreign tourists. The interactions of the local people and the tourists change the pattern of life and values of the indigenous people. Tanjung Isuy is a unique village in East Kalimantan, which has the tradition of conducting welcoming ceremonies for the tourists coming there. This research uses qualitative method. The researcher stayed and lived in that society, observing and listening to everything happening and being talked about. The researcher also carried out the data collection directly from the society, making notes of everything the people know and feel. Such a research is also called ethnographic research. This is considered a very important attempt to see the process of the changes occuring in the Dayak society in a given period of time. The data shows that the process of changes has been taking place in t~e Dayak society since some centuries ago, especially by the influence of Kutai Sultanate, the coming of Islam, and of the coming of Dutch colonialism. To unveil the changes of Dayak culture, the scope of this research is limited to the periods between the 16th century and today {1994} . The culture of the Dayak has been changing, such as the eradication of headhunting custom, the effort to uniform Dayak tradition, the giving of title to village leaders, the formalisation of leaders {petinggi} responsible to Dutch Indies government and the Kutai Sultanate, the inducement of the gift and tax system, the introduction of market money economy, the introduction of new plants, such as rubber, the introduction of modern education system run by the Christian mission {Catholic and Protestant}, and the introduction of Islam. Those changes have transformed the Dayak identity. The visits of tourist have caused the process of desacralisation, the sacral ceremonies being packed into artistic forms to attract the tourists. Some crafts and statues which happened to be very sacred or that could cause calamity, are packed as commodity.
