Abstract

Omphalitis and wnbilical cord separation time contributed toward the number of morbiditas and mortalitas for infants. Many other topical ways have been used for umbilical cord care, but there wasn't a mean difference in infection and time of umbilical cord separation in corhrone database observation (2004 ). Breastmilk which contains anti infection and anti inflammation can be used for umbilical cord care and World Health Orgnization (WHO) recommended to develop it. The purpose of the study was to explain the effect of topical breastmilk care model concerned of omphalitis and umbilical cord separation for infants. The design in this study was Pre Experimental. Subject were newborn from birth that met inclusion criteria in mother and children hospital of Kendangsari Surabaya in May to June 2012. Sample size were 30 newly born babies devided into 2 group, namely intervented group consisting 15 babies andcontrol group consisting of 15 babies. Sample were done by using consecutive sampling. Omphalitis sign and separation time were observed and reported to parents. Omphalitis data were analyzed using different analysis with Chi-Square and Umbilical cord separation time with Independent t- test with a significance level 95% (a ~ 0,05). The result showed, there was't significant different of omphalitis topical breastmilk care model than open dry care (p = 0,33) > 0,05 and there was a mean significant different in time of wnbilical cord separation in topical breastmilk care model than open dry care model with value of(p = 0,020) < 0,05. Topical breastmilk cord care model lead to concern of omphalitis and time separation in which was shorter than that with dry care open. Breastmilk could be used as substituted for the best topical for umbilical cord care as safe effective and efficient.
