Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (OM) is a group of metaboJic diseases with characteristic of hyperglycemia. Insulin therapy or Hypoglycemia Oral Agent (OHA)/oral hypoglycemic drugs (OHO) are required to maintain a stable blood glucose. Elevated levels of insulin are less precise, both insulin after subcutaneous injection or by drugs that increase insulin secretion as sulfonylureas may cause hypoglycemia. Consumption of foods that are too few and strenous activity are also the cause of hypoglycemia. DSME is the process of teaching people to manage their diabetes. The purpose of this study was to explain the improvement of Self-Care behavior management of hypoglycemia in diabetic patients after administration of DSME. This study used pre-experimental design methods one group pre and posttest design. The population in this study was all patients with diabetes enrolled in elderly posyandu Slemanan village. Samples comprised 28 respondents was taken according to the inclusion criteria. Data were collected using a questionnaire that measures cognitive, affective and psychomotor diabetic patient in the management hypoglycemia before and after the DSME. Then data were processed and analyzed using Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results showed effect of DSME on cognitive aspects where p < alpha (p = 0.000), the affective aspect p < alpha (p = 0.007), and psychomotor aspects p < alpha (p = 0.004). From the above it can be concluded that effect of DSME on self care behavior of patients with DM in the management of hypoglycemia. Further study should use direct observation of patients self care behaviors with diabetes mellitus especially on the psychomotor aspects.
