Abstract
The Balinesee community call gener-ally be divided into two major" groupinq: (1) the Bali Aga or Gebog Domas, and (2) the Wong Majapahit. The first mainly resides in the mountain region of the Kintamani District and the District of Tejakula, and the second inhabits the low land parts of the island. The Gebog Domas community, which is later divided into smaller groups, such as Geboq Satak~ Sukawana, Kintamani, Selulung, and Bantang, differs in certain respects from the Wong Majapahit community. The differences lie mainly in the practices of customs~ aspects of culture and rituals. The signifincance difference is reflected in the direction of worship. The Gebog Domas community worships Pucak Panarajon Temple, whereas the Wong Majapahit communi,ty wor-ships Besakih Temple. Social stratifications and language use can aslo be taken as diffentiating aspects of two communities. The study is an effort to exploit the social-semiotic str-lActure of the Geboq Domas community which are reflected in va~ious types of or-al and written texts. Illustrations and arguments provided to support the endeavour.
