Abstract
The purpose of research is to describe an adaptation in associated with status and function of mamak (brother of mother) within matrilineal society in Minangkabau with a change of family structure. This research is undertaken in Kenagarian Rao-rao, Sungai Tarab Subdistrict, Tanah Datar Regency, with a unit of mamak analyse in the family. The
data are collected through interviews, observation and document available in documental center on cultural of Minangkabau. The analyse is done by following grounded
research pattern. Status (position) and function of mamak on the sister and nephew in extended family (saparllik) of his mothers, have performed an adaptation to the children and wife in nuclear family (samande) by taking over a part of mamak's activities in his wife's family. Suman do (husband of the sister) who has replaced mamak's function successfully toward his children and wife, then he is given a label as sumando mamak rumaH.
