Abstract

Hypertension is generally occured in elderly, mainly caused by aging.process and lack of healthy lifestyles. Lemon Aromatherapy is one of nonpharmacology therapy that could be used to reduce blood pressure reduce inhypertensive patient. However, lemon aromatherapy has not been tried in elderly.Therefore the purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of lemonaromatherapy (Citrus Limon) to decrease blood pressure in elderly withhypertension in Elderly Institution HargoDedali Surabaya.This study used quasy experiment design with two groups of pre testandpost test. The population was elderly with primary hypertension who lived in theelderly Institution ofHargoDedali Surabaya. The sample was taken by purposivesampling, involving 14 respondents who were selected based on inclusion andexclusion criteria. The independent variable was a direct lemon aromatherapyinhalation with a handkerchief as the media. The dependent variables were thereduce of systolic and dyastolic blood pressure measured usingsphygnomanometer and stethoscope. The results were analyzed by Paired t Testand Independent T Test, with the level of significance a <0.05.The results showed that the treatment group has significance level p =0.005 and the results ofIndependent t Test showed p = 0.018. From the statisticaltest, it was that lemon aromatherapy has a significant efect in reducing bloodpressure both systolic and dyastoliclevel.The conclusion of this research was that lemon aromatherapy proven to beeffective as complementary therapy in reducing blood pressure in elderly patients.It is suggested that this research result should be valuable for hypertension.Further studies are needed to distinguised the effect of lemon aromatherapy inpatient with secondary hypertension.
