Abstract

Hypertension is a major cause of heart failure, stroke and kidney failure. Hypertension is also called the silent killer, because people with hypertension do not often show symptoms. Hypertension can be prevented by regular blood pressure monitoring, a program of healthy life without tobacco smoke, increasing physical activity I exercise, healthy diet with balanced calori e through the consumption of high fiber, low fat and low salt. The purpose of this study was to explain the relation ship between types of smokers with the degree of hypertension in patients with hypertension in Pukesmas Gading Tambaksari Surabaya. The research method used in this study was correlational and analytical research. The population in this study was all male patient with hypertensive aged 18- 55 years and the smokers who visited Pukesmas Gading Tambaksari Surabaya in September-November 2010, the number of samples was 54 respondents. The dependent variable was the degree of hypertension and the .independent variable was the type of smoker. Data analysis using Spearman Rho correlation test, with significance level a 0.05. The results showed that there was relationship between types of smokers and the degree of hypertension in patients with hypertension with significant results (p = 0.026). 1t can be concluded that there is a relationship between type of smoker and a degree of hypertension in patients with hypertension . This could be advice for smokers who suffer from hypertension to reduce the consumption of cigarettes or stop smoking to avoid all the dangers of smoking, including hypertension.
