Abstract

This final report was written to uncover the use of alliteration and idiomatic expressions in the narrative storyboard of the quiz gamification entitled “The Election Hero.” This gamification, designed as an educational tool on election and English idiom topics, is targeted at Indonesian teenagers aged 17-19 who are bilingual, living abroad, and new voters in Indonesia. The goal is to help them understand how elections work while also improving their English skills on learning new terms in English using idiom, facilitated using mini-dictionary tools on the game. The analysis is based on the writer's apprenticeship experience at The Power of Humanity Foundation in Hungary. Three methods were used for this analysis: observation, document review, and examination of the game prototype titled “The Election Hero.” The results reveal the use of several types of alliteration and idiomatic expressions. Specifically, five types of alliteration were identified: sibilance alliteration, transverse alliteration, double alliteration, internal alliteration, and continuous alliteration. Additionally, four types of idiomatic expressions were found: phrasal-verb idioms, tournure idioms, encoding idioms, and phrasal compound idioms. This study highlights the importance of linguistic devices in educational gamification, demonstrating how they can enhance engagement and learning outcomes for young bilingual voters to learn complex topics such as politics and idiomatic expression.
