Abstract
"Purpose/Hypothesis: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of high impactexercises on increasing or maintaining femoral neck bone mineral density. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed from Scopus and Pubmed/MEDLINE. The inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials and cohort studies that was published in 2010- 2021, postmenopausal or perimenopausal women, and are given high impact exercise as intervention for at least 3 weeks. The exclusion criteria were non-English studies, with no available full-text access, and bone mineral density measurement was not done using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scans. Results: The search yielded 41 studies. Next 12 duplicates were removed, and 29 articles remained. Titles and abstracts were screened, leaving 5 potential studies. Furthermore, the studies were selected and 3 studies are eligible. Aerobic dance exercise shows the most increase in femoral neck region bone mineral density (p<0,01) in the intervention group. Although not all studies show that the improvement of femoral neck region bone mineral density are significant, exercise is still recommended as the benefits are not inconsequential. Conclusion: The review concludes that high impact exercises such as an aerobic dance exercise, that involves stepping rapidly and dynamically, combined with a supplementation of calcium and vitamin D shows the best result in increasing femoral neck BMD. Building a healthy lifestyle through exercise is recommended, however, personal adjustments are needed before recommending high impact exercise as a way to increase the femoral neck BMD to patients."
