Abstract
The phenomenon of cosmetic surgery is increasingly prevalent among the emerging adulthood age group (18–25 years). This study empirically examines the mediating role of body dissatisfaction in the relationship between social comparison on social media and the intention to undergo cosmetic surgery among emerging adults. A quantitative approach with a correlational survey design was employed. The study involved 119 participants aged 18–25 years who were active social media users, selected via purposive sampling.Instruments used were the Social Comparison Scale, the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ-34), and the Acceptance of Cosmetic Surgery Scale (SSMBK). Mediation analysis using bootstrapping via the medmod module in Jamovi 2.5.3 was applied. Results revealed a strong positive correlation between social comparison and body dissatisfaction (r = 0.947, p < 0.001), between social comparison and cosmetic
surgery intention (r = 0.942, p < 0.001), and between body dissatisfaction and cosmetic surgery intention (r = 0.976, p < 0.001). Mediation analysis confirmed that body dissatisfaction significantly mediated the relationship (β = 0.0989, p = 0.005), while the direct effect of social comparison remained significant (β = 0.5020, p < 0.001), indicating partial mediation.
