Abstract

Heteronormativity, which has been rooted in our society for so long, is dangerous and harmful to society. The aim of this study is to understand the effect of heteronormativity on homosexuals in the 1950s as well as to understand how they negotiate with the heteronormativity itself. This paper discusses an issue of heteronormativity in the 1950s that exists in The Story of Marriage. By using the qualitative study, this paper thoroughly observes the primary text, including its elements of the story and decides which part of the story that significant enough to be analyzed. Any additional data needed will be gathered through books, journal articles, essays, etc. Heteronormativity that happened in America during the 1950s was a result of the social pressure of the era. Since people at that time still perceive sexuality as an unchanging natural force, thus makes gay people judged. Therefore, people in the 1950s set a hierarchy system that categorizes good sex and bad sex and it leads to how society treats them. Consequently, this makes gay people decided to negotiate their way with heteronormativity instead of coming out as gay in order to fit into society.
