Abstract

This study aims to reveal the reflection of power feminism through Marla Grayson as the powerful female character in I Care A Lot (2020). The main substantial issue in this movie is how women's representation in media production is fully concerned with implementing the feminist goal of creating equivalent power. To gain in-depth knowledge, this study applied a theory of Power Feminism by Naomi Wolf (1993) and used narrative and non-narrative approaches to collect the data. Since this is a qualitative study, the library research served as the main data source supporting the interpretation of power feminism’s attachment in the movie I Care A Lot (2020). Through Marla Grayson, this movie tries to deliver the empowering actions portrayed by her motivation to be equally seen as a powerful liberated woman with firm control in using her power. Marla takes advantage of women’s rights to claim her sexuality, performativity, and financial independence, although her motives to achieve those economic goals slightly contradict the idea of women’s power by manipulating people. The discussion indicated that Marla’s manipulation is considered women’s power in showing their intelligence proud. The result of this study reveals that Marla Grayson reflects the dominant idea of power feminism which led her to be a powerful icon in the United States.
