Abstract

"The development of antibiotic resistance in aquaculture provides impetus for further efforts to find new antimicrobial agents to minimize infection and overcome the problem of resistance antibiotics. Fish skin mucus plays an important role in physical defense against invading pathogens. The aims of this study were to explore the antibacterial potential of skin mucus dumbo catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Aeromonas hydrophila bacteria were challenged with dumbo catfish skin mucus through a diffusion test using a paper disc. This research was done from November to Desember 2021. Fish skin mucus obtained from 5 different dumbo catfish were used as repeats. Sampling was done using purposive sampling technique. Regardless of gender, the selection of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) samples was taken from fish that grew healthy 3.5 months old with a weight between 108-112 grams and a length between 24-25.5 cm. Based on the results of this study, the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Aeromonas hydrophila were isolated from catfish pond water in Kabat, Banyuwangi. Dumbo catfish mucus has antibacterial potential against the three bacteria, those are Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Aeromonas hydrophila were inhibited with an inhibitory diameter of 9.08 mm, 8.61 mm and 8.18 mm. "
